  • Hope Harbor thanked the Grand Island community for its support during the food shortage, which has allowed the organization to resume delivering monthly food boxes to those in need. The group remains committed to providing essential assistance to local residents.  The Grand Island Independent
  • A new Grand Island veterans group will officially unveil its Veterans Reintegration & Relaxation Center at B.E. Bonfire on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 1300 S. Locust St.; leaders Charles Reeves and Army veteran Mike Kraft aim to offer veterans a place to reconnect and support each other with food provided by Pig in a Bag.  The Grand Island Independent
  • A fast-moving fire burned through 60 acres near the Platte River in Hall County Wednesday evening, drawing help from multiple fire departments, local farmers and volunteers. Fire crews battled the blaze for several hours — navigating dense trees and a shifting river channel as a Kenesaw man was cited for starting the fire without a permit.  KSNB

CRIME NEWS

  • A judge on Tuesday sentenced Jeramy Elrod to 20-40 years in prison after police arrested him last summer when drugs, guns and a stolen vehicle were found in a motel room near Interstate 80; prosecutors dropped nine additional charges in a plea bargain.  KSNB
  • A vehicle stolen from Utah was recovered in Grand Island on April 16 and the driver Diego A. Lara Perez was arrested for possession of stolen property.  Central Nebraska Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Grand Island and Hall County will host a Vietnam Veteran Remembrance Ceremony on April 30 at 2 p.m. outside the Hall County Courthouse to honor veterans and those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Churches will ring bells at 11 a.m. and seven Nebraska Army National Guard soldiers will carry flags at noon while local leaders—Mayor Steele and Commissioner Quandt—pay tribute with speeches, Taps and a 21-gun salute—marking a solemn remembrance.  Central Nebraska Today
  • Grand Island Parks and Recreation is rebuilding the Pier Park skatepark after community input — demolition began Monday as Artisan Concrete Services removes nearly 25 years-old steel and wood to install modern concrete features — at a cost of $892,783.50.  KSNB
