CULTURE NEWS

  • Home Free will perform a free concert on Friday, Sept. 4 at TD Landing during the Nebraska State Fair as part of the Nebraska Lottery Concert Series — families require paid gate admission. The group will deliver signature harmonies in a show designed for all ages.  KSNB

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Farmers in central Nebraska are using John Deere self-driving tractors to complete tillage work + manage other tasks as they prepare fields for planting season.  KSNB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Twenty-two Grand Island Senior High students earned 13 medals in 14 categories at the State SkillsUSA competition held at Heartland Events Center and Fonner Park over the weekend, while Principal D.W. Holley received the SkillsUSA Outstanding Leadership Award for his support of career technical education.  Central Nebraska Today
  • Nebraska lawmakers passed a plan on Apr. 14 to help local families afford school meals by easing costs for students. Officials say details for implementation are pending.  KSNB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Grand Island Fire Department announced guidelines for the spring open burn period from Sunday, Apr. 19 to Saturday, May 2 (burning allowed from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.) and stated residents must obtain a $10 permit from Fire Station 1 between Tuesday, Apr. 15 and Friday, May 1 to burn materials only from private one- and two-family properties while following safety rules.  Central Nebraska Today
  • Black Hills Energy will refund $4.7 million to customers after a rate adjustment approved by the Nebraska Public Service Commission, with most receiving a one-time credit on their bill + average refunds of $15 for homes and $131 for large businesses. A final report is expected after refunds are processed.  KSNB
  • Buffalo County Commissioners rejected all three bids for two new pickleball courts at Ravenna Lake on Tuesday, April 14. The county approved donating three surplus emergency light bars — a decision aimed at aiding local agencies.  Central Nebraska Today
  • Grand Island Parks and Recreation Department is accepting applications for lifeguards for summer positions at Island Oasis Water Park and Lincoln Pool. Applicants can enjoy flexible shifts, free training, and a starting wage of $16 per hour as the department prepares for the season from Memorial Day through summer's end.  Central Nebraska Today

  • Northwest girls soccer team earned a 2-1 win over the Shamrocks Monday at Viking Field + pressed with a two-goal lead in the first half. A busy doubleheader also saw Columbus Scotus secure a 9-1 boys victory over Lexington.  Central Nebraska Today
