CRIME NEWS

  • A Philips man was sentenced to 37 months in federal court for carrying a firearm while using THC after he was caught at Central Nebraska Regional Airport in 2021 — he was found asleep aboard an 11-passenger Cessna after taking a pickup truck without permission and being seen with an AR-15 — and he admitted using marijuana.  Nebraska TV
  • On April 12, officers responded at 7:18 p.m.—a suspect entered a home on N. Sheridan Ave. and assaulted a 32-year-old woman before stealing her car with a 17-year-old and an 11-year-old inside; suspect Alex Cruz fled and now faces charges of domestic assault, negligent child abuse, theft, robbery, false imprisonment and burglary.  Central Nebraska Today

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • State leaders cast doubt on a UNMC study linking high nitrate in water to childhood cancer after emails showed officials questioned the findings during a public records fight. The emails reveal that officials — including former drinking water chief Sue Dempsey — noted multiple chemical exposures and other factors may drive cancer risks in rural areas.  The Grand Island Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Grand Island is working to add more renewable energy and natural gas power while keeping its old coal plant running. Utilities Director Ryan Schmitz said city leaders will decide between adding 22 megawatts with almost no rate change — or 37 megawatts with about a 3% rate increase to meet growing power needs.  Nebraska TV
  • Governor Jim Pillen said three bills—LB140, LB383, and LB504—moved forward in the Legislature as lawmakers work on measures to keep phones out of schools and limit social media damage to Nebraska’s kids.
