  • Goodwill Industries of Greater Nebraska announced it will close its Behavioral Health Services program at 1808 S. Eddy St, with Day Rehabilitation and Day Support ending April 24 and the SOAR program closing June 30, as the nonprofit coordinates referrals for affected clients and staff (eight full-time employees are impacted).  Central Nebraska Today

  • Grand Island Casino Resort marked its one-year anniversary today as it celebrated a year of service (with community support) and plans to introduce new events soon.  KSNB

CULTURE NEWS

  • Board game enthusiasts and self-proclaimed geeks will gather at the Cornhusker Hotel this weekend for the Great Plains Game Festival (an event open to all ages).  The Grand Island Independent

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Grand Island Public Schools Board approved the purchase of the Eureka Math Squared curriculum on April 9 at a cost of $1.55 million after a 15-month evaluation with teacher and stakeholder input. Teachers will begin using the new materials in August to boost student understanding.  Central Nebraska Today
  • CHI Health is offering a free Health Care Career Camp for Nebraska high school students to explore health sciences through hands-on activities and hospital tours at Good Samaritan and St. Francis on June 2 and 3; students must apply online by May 22 as space is limited.  Central Nebraska Today
  • The board voted 9 to 0 on April 9 to award a $4,172,571 HVAC upgrade bid to Mid Plains Construction at Barr Middle School (work will begin at the lower level while the current system remains operational during the school year).  Central Nebraska Today
  • SkillsUSA hosted a statewide event in Grand Island where over 3,000 kids competed in areas like pin design, welding, and Quiz Bowl. The event (teaching teamwork and job skills) concludes today.  Nebraska TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Nebraska law enforcement are working overtime to support the Put The Phone Away or Pay campaign, and the DOT pays extra wages to monitor drivers and reduce distracted driving in Grand Island.  KSNB
