COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The city council approved a master plan for the Good Life District that calls for 1,388 multi-family units, 291 single-family units, a 2.6-mile trail, 10.77 acres for a possible school (and a 19.6 acre expansion of Eagle Scout Lake) to boost housing and amenities in Grand Island. Bulldozers will begin turning soil (this summer) as the project moves forward with input from more than 500 local residents.  The Grand Island Independent
  • Downtown Grand Island’s Railside district is getting new trees and planters + crews are working on careful landscaping; city officials said further improvements will be planned in coming weeks.  The Grand Island Independent

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Grand Island Area Economic Development Corporation and the Grand Island Chamber of Commerce joined forces under Mary Berlie to boost business activity and economic growth in Grand Island. The co-located groups streamlined their operations (reducing redundancies) and will track engagement levels (including new business development) to measure their progress in supporting local businesses.  The Grand Island Independent
  • Grand Island Casino Resort will open April 10 with a VIP gathering at 4:00 p.m. and doors opening at 6:00 p.m., featuring a 7-story building with a casino, hotel with 162 rooms, restaurants, and a spa. The $185M project will create nearly 400 jobs and add extra parking on the campus north of State Fair Park Boulevard—approval was given on March 21 by the Nebraska Racing and Gaming Commission.  The Grand Island Independent

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Nine Fulbright Scholars from UNL visited Grand Island Wednesday and met with Mayor Roger Steele, toured the police and fire departments — scholars praised their teamwork— and attended a panel discussion at the public library where they shared impressions of local services.  The Grand Island Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Jim Pillen + NDVA Deputy Director Levi Bennet honored Vietnam War veterans at the annual ceremony on March 29 when Gov. Pillen signed a proclamation declaring the day in honor of veterans. Over 150 people, including 75 veterans + family members and friends, attended the event to recognize the service of those who served in Vietnam.  KSNB
  • Mayor Roger Steele said Wednesday's vote moved Camp Augustine closer to joining the Nebraska state park system—further boosting plans to make the camp a vibrant state park.  The Grand Island Independent
  • On Friday, Nebraska lawmakers introduced two bills that propose using red light cameras and stop classes to deter reckless driving—one bill would allow the Transportation Department to set up speed systems in work zones while the other would use license plate readers for civil enforcement. The proposals come after a record rise in roadway deaths, aiming to improve road safety without resorting to jail for violators.  KSNB
