EDUCATION NEWS

  • Grand Island Public Schools hosted its third annual Mental Health Summit Friday (Mar. 27) at the O’Connor Learning Center, where counselors, social workers, and community partners gathered to share practical strategies to support students and families. The sessions addressed issues such as anxiety and depression in schools.  KSNB
  • Over 700 Islander students participated at Grand Island Senior High's annual hiring fair (March 25) where 65 community partners offered seasonal and full-time job opportunities and career guidance from local employers.  Central Nebraska Today
  • State lawmakers narrowly approved a bill to expand reading support for third grade students by giving parents the final say on retention, a move championed by Gov. Pillen; the 26 to 10 vote on Thursday means the measure takes effect in the school year (2028 to 29) with acceleration classes.  KSNB

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Crane conservation expert George Archibald, 79, has spent over 50 years protecting cranes and is in Nebraska this month to see the sandhill migration near the Platte River + he is staying for the first time for a full month.  KSNB

  • Gov. Jim Pillen honored Vietnam veterans on Friday in Lincoln by signing a proclamation declaring March 29 as Vietnam War Veterans Day; over 75 people (including 30 veterans) attended the ceremony.  KSNB

HEALTH NEWS

  • CHI Health St. Francis recognized hospitalist Dr. Ryan Irick with the 2026 Physician Excellence Award on National Doctors’ Day—March 27—highlighting his dedication to delivering compassionate, high-quality care for patients and staff.  Central Nebraska Today

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Sterling Estates is set to build a new apartment complex in northwest Grand Island (City Council approved over $4 million in Tax Increment Financing to offset rising construction costs).  KSNB

SPORTS NEWS

  • Grand Island Central Catholic's girls captured the team title at a home tennis invitational on Thursday at Ryder Park and Senior High courts by winning all four events + outscoring Waverly and York. They finished with 24 points as Maddie Graybill and teammates achieved perfect records in singles and doubles.  Central Nebraska Today
