COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Y102 hosts its 24 Hours of Hope telethon today through tomorrow in Kearney to raise funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The radio station set a record last year by raising $362,121 while marking 25 years of volunteer support.  Central Nebraska Today
  • Grand Island Public Library will get a new bookmobile after the City Council approved $70,000 on March 24 to fund a library kiosk. Library Director Celine Swan said the bookmobile (estimated to cost between $280,000 and $300,000) will be built in seven to eight months using grants and local funds.  Central Nebraska Today
  • Grand Island Area Habitat for Humanity opened early bird registration for its annual Habitat FORE! Humanity Golf Tournament, with teams of four priced at $500 until April 1 and registration including lunch, two drink tickets, evening hors d’oeuvres, on-course games and raffle prizes; proceeds will support affordable local housing.  Central Nebraska Today

  • Grand Island Public Schools Foundation now accepts nominations for the 2025-26 Teacher, Principal, and Staff Member of the Year in partnership with First National Bank.  The Grand Island Independent

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Drought conditions along Interstate 80 in central Nebraska have worsened today, creating an extreme drought (D3) in parts of Frontier, Dawson, Gosper, Phelps, Buffalo, and Hall counties while nearly all of the state is experiencing some level of drought.  Central Nebraska Today
  • Local residents oppose a $600M solar project planned nearby, saying it may scar farmland (a judge noted that if not here, where?) while discussions continue about the project's impact on the community.  The Grand Island Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tuesday, the city council approved a $430K change order for Ryder Baseball Field renovations — part of the Island Oasis project — and the move supports upcoming upgrades to local sports facilities.  KSNB

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Central District Health Department earned national accreditation from the Public Health Accreditation Board, joining 415 departments nationwide for strong performance and innovation. The recognition builds local trust and could boost funding for vital programs (including WIC and immunizations).  KSNB
