  • Northwest High School is honoring grad Greg Hake, a former Navy SEAL turned corporate vice president, as its Distinguished Alumnus for his impressive journey from service to business, with the ceremony planned at the school today.  The Grand Island Independent

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Cottonwood Fire is 80% contained but remains active west of Jeffrey Reservoir as crews brace for flare-ups while extreme weather later today may boost fire activity. Firefighters + National Guard helicopters are building firelines on location while conditions continue to be closely monitored.  Central Nebraska Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Grand Island emergency responders ran their annual March Madness drill on Thursday, March 19 to practice responses for a catastrophic tornado (modeled on the 2011 Joplin event) and test interagency coordination. The exercise is part of the city's ongoing commitment to public safety.  Nebraska TV
  • USDA is offering disaster assistance to help Nebraska farmers and livestock producers recover from wildfires that burned 824,000 acres. Affected producers must report losses and apply for programs like the Livestock Indemnity Program before March 1.  KSNB
  • On Friday, Gov. Pillen met with firefighters, emergency management representatives and volunteers on the front lines of the wildfire response near Grand Island — officials said the meeting helped assess current efforts.  KSNB

HEALTH NEWS

  • Nebraska meteorologist Kent Boughton announced his stage 4 cancer diagnosis on Friday and has completed one round of chemotherapy with another scheduled for the end of March. He said he will continue forecasting for News Channel Nebraska despite voice changes from treatment.  KSNB
  • CHI Health is hosting three tributes in April to honor National Donate Life Month such as flag raising ceremonies on Wednesday, April 1 at CHI Health facilities, a blue and green day on April 10, and a remembrance ceremony with tree planting on April 29 at CHI Health St. Francis.  Central Nebraska Today

SPORTS NEWS

  • Grand Island Islanders won their season opener with an 11-1 victory over Lincoln High at Ashley Park Thursday. The team scored seven runs in the bottom of the fifth (with key hits from Schroeder and Nelson) and will face Millard North Friday at 4:30 p.m.  Central Nebraska Today
