- ➤ A dog rescued from a mobile home fire on March 9 is breathing today because firefighters used a pet oxygen mask donated by Animal Medical Clinic, Grand Island Fire Chief Cory Schmidt said (officials noted the donation helped save the dog). Central Nebraska Today

- ➤ Google is proposing a massive data center in Nebraska that may use more power than Lincoln’s peak summer demand. The project would be powered by a new natural gas plant (with carbon capture to reduce emissions) pending a legislative bill, and it may come online by 2029. Central Nebraska Today
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Grand Island Creative District has been awarded $100,000 over two years from the Nebraska Arts Council to support arts initiatives with a new part-time coordinator starting in July and upcoming community events designed to boost local engagement. KSNB
- ➤ The Adams County Fairgrounds will host a three-night concert series in Hastings from July 16 to 18 featuring national artists Hairball, Trace Adkins, and Wyatt Flores. Organizers say the event will offer live music, family fun & a summer celebration. Central Nebraska Today
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Agricultural Committee will host Ag Day on Tuesday, March 17 at Fonner Park where about 775 fourth-graders from 16 local schools will participate in hands-on learning and live demonstrations with farm animals. - ➤ Brian Kort from Grand Island Public Schools has been named the 2026 UNKLES Award recipient for his leadership and service in education. As the district's recruitment and retention coordinator and a first-generation college graduate (and guest presenter at UNK), Kort is recognized for mentoring future educators. KSNB

- ➤ Grand Island Utilities Department announced development of a Regional Public Power Workforce Training Facility in partnership with MEAN and municipal utilities on secured land, and the new site will host hands-on training for local lineworkers and the inaugural Heartland Municipal Lineworkers Conference (Sept 29-Oct 1). - ➤ Gov. Pillen declared an emergency on Friday, Mar. 13 to mobilize state assets, including 26 National Guard personnel, firefighting aircraft, and NDOT road graders, as wildfires led to evacuations and road closures across central and western Nebraska — the governor plans an aerial tour this weekend for updates.
