COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central NE in Grand Island is joining with local police and firefighters to launch the Bigs with Badges program that pairs at-risk kids with first responder mentors. The program got a $12,000 donation from the Greater Grand Island Community Foundation—funds that will pay for outreach and team coordination.  KSNB

CRIME NEWS

  • Grand Island police responded to a burglary at Sterling Apartments when a suspect stole tools valued at about $910 from the maintenance shed on March 5 — the incident was reported on March 12.  Central Nebraska Today

CULTURE NEWS

  • On March 26, nine Fulbright Scholars from UNL will visit Grand Island for a day of tours and cultural presentations—beginning with a 9 a.m. meeting with Mayor Steele at City Hall and followed by visits to local sites before a public Q&A at the Grand Island Public Library.  Central Nebraska Today
  • The Grand Island Public Library is showing The Power of Place exhibit featuring watercolors, alcohol ink and pastel works by local artists Chris Hochstetler and Jacki Hochstetler. The art explores local landscapes and history and will be on display until April 4, 2025—an artist reception is set for March 23 from 2 to 4 p.m.  Central Nebraska Today

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • State park visitors in south-central Nebraska will soon enjoy better fishing, camping and day-use areas at parks like Windmill, Johnson Lake and Cheyenne. Projects include new ADA-compliant fishing piers, a playground, improved bathrooms and electric campsites — work that starts soon and is set to finish by spring 2026.  Central Nebraska Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Hastings and Grand Island have been awarded a share of $12.54 million from the Rural Workforce Housing Fund for 2024 to build affordable housing. Hastings will redevelop an old middle school while Grand Island’s residential project funding has reached $6.4 million & will support local growth.  KSNB
  • Grand Island City Council unanimously approved a study to mark a section in northwest Grand Island as blighted and substandard for future housing development. The study covers a 49-acre area and may lead to a tax increment financing application for new apartments or homes (including upgrades for streets, sewer, water, and utilities).  KSNB
  • Driving challenges on South Locust will begin Monday in Grand Island—once the initial phase is complete in May, north-south traffic will be rerouted to side streets and roundabout work is set for 2026.  The Grand Island Independent
