COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Railside Barbershop in Grand Island is hosting its 'Cuts for Courage' event, where free haircuts are offered for veterans & local community members. The event supports veterans and will take place soon at the barbershop.  KSNB
  • Grand Island residents pressed the United Veterans Club to fly its flag full time during a local meeting. Club representatives say the move reflects a growing community call for honoring veterans (and boosting local pride).  KSNB

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On March 12, a rekindled brush pile burn triggered a grass fire southwest of Donipan, and local farmers quickly helped contain the flames. Officials report that the fire was rapidly controlled & further spread was prevented.  KSNB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Brian Kort from Grand Island Public Schools has been named the recipient of the UNKLES Award, recognizing his exceptional leadership in recruitment and mentoring within education. The award, presented by UNK’s Department of Educational Administration, marks him as one of about 60 distinguished educational leaders (a longtime supporter of UNK teacher education).  Central Nebraska Today
  • Walnut Middle School teacher Blake Teichmeier was named the 2025-2026 Mary Lynn Reiser Economic Educator of the Year by the Nebraska Council on Economic Education for enhancing financial literacy lessons. His interactive projects (including GreatCents.org) help students connect real-world finance to everyday life.  Central Nebraska Today

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A magnitude 2.5 earthquake struck south central Nebraska at 7:15 a.m. Thursday just southeast of Cowles; this event marks the fourth quake recorded in the state this month.  KSNB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Construction on Highway 30 in west Grand Island will resume Thursday by Werner Construction. Crews will build left-turn-only lanes at Claude Road, replace the Stolley Park Road intersection and update medians and traffic control, with work expected to finish in June.  KSNB
  • CRANE public transit operates six days a week using a demand-response, point-to-point service — some local residents say the town could benefit from expanded options.  The Grand Island Independent

SPORTS NEWS

  • Trainer David Anderson was fined $1,000 by the Nebraska Racing and Gaming Commission for having a needle and syringe in his tack room at Fonner Park on March 6 - he waived his right to a stewards hearing and his racing operation remains unchanged for the weekend.  Central Nebraska Today
