ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fast-moving field fire near Giltner threatened four farmsteads Tuesday afternoon but firefighters protected all buildings and contained the blaze by 8 p.m. — two received treatment for minor smoke inhalation.  KSNB

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Nebraska State Fair in Grand Island invites artists of all ages to design the official marathon race shirt themed America 250, with entries accepted until May 1 and prizes including a $1,000 grand award plus four Best of Show awards. The fair runs from Aug. 28 through Labor Day.  Central Nebraska Today

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Central Community College in Hastings gave Jim DeBord an honorary diploma for 33 years of heavy equipment work — during its recent scholarship presentation, two heavy equipment operator technician students received $1,000 scholarships, including one from Grand Island.  KSNB
  • Grand Island Public Schools announced that Elizabeth 'Libby' Banderas will join Westridge Middle School as assistant principal for the 2026-27 school year (she brings ten years of teaching and coaching experience from Lexington Public Schools). The district plans meet-and-greet events for staff and families before school starts this summer.  Central Nebraska Today
  • A fifth-grader from Buffalo Hills Elementary won the Buffalo County Spelling Bee in Amherst after spelling difficult words correctly. He will compete at the Regional Spelling Bee on March 14 at the Strauss Performing Arts Center if he finishes among the top ten.  KSNB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At today's State of the City address, officials discussed the proposed Goodlife District, which will go before voters at the primary election on May 12.  KSNB
  • The 56th Street improvement project has resumed work and drivers should expect occasional construction delays + smoother, safer roads once the work is complete.  The Grand Island Independent

SPORTS NEWS

  • On March 9, Nebraska extended coach Fred Hoiberg's contract through the 2031-32 season ahead of the Big Ten Tournament after the Huskers set records with 26 wins and 15 conference wins — a move that athletic director Troy Dannen said highlights his strong leadership.  Nebraska TV
