COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Officers from Grand Island Police Department visited the Grand Island Public Library to hold a story time where Officer Adam Kully read two books—letting children color and see police equipment up close. The event helped show police as community helpers.  KSNB
  • Dozens plunged into the cold waters at Holmes Lake Saturday for the Polar Plunge supporting Special Olympics Nebraska (a local fundraiser uniting community members).  KSNB

CULTURE NEWS

  • Teams from Grand Island, North Platte, Kearney, Adams Central, Hastings and Northwest competed in the 20th Annual Nebraska State Dance Championship Dance Classes A and B on Saturday, Feb. 21, at the Heartland Event Center in Grand Island (photos by Eldon Holmes).  Central Nebraska Today

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kent Mann was chosen by the Grand Island school board to fill a vacant seat and will begin serving at upcoming meetings (his background is expected to bring fresh ideas to local education efforts).  The Grand Island Independent
  • Grand Island Public Schools announced a $5.7M project to improve Gates Elementary set to begin this fall — the first phase of a 20-year, three-phase plan to enhance school facilities.  The Grand Island Independent

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Friday, Feb. 20, the NSAA State Boys Wrestling Championship held its second day at CHI Health Center in Omaha, where 18 wrestlers advanced to the finals; one competitor from Grand Island joined other schools in the tournament.  Central Nebraska Today
  • No. 5 Nebraska wrestling wrapped up its regular season with a 32-6 victory over Utah Valley by winning eight of 10 matches, with early technical falls boosting the score, and will head to University Park — March 7-8 for the Big Ten Championships.  Central Nebraska Today
  • Pryce Sandfort led Nebraska men's basketball to an 87-64 win over Penn State Saturday at Pinnacle Bank Arena with a career-high 33 points. The Huskers, who shot 40 percent on three-pointers and out-rebounded their opponent, will face Maryland Wednesday at home.  Central Nebraska Today
