- ➤ John Knicely, Kevin Kugler, Steve Lundy & Ken Siemek will be inducted into the state broadcasters hall on Aug. 11 in Lincoln, expanding the hall to 127 members. Ken retired in 2025 after modernizing weather forecasting at KOLN & KGIN TV and providing critical storm warnings. Central Nebraska Today
- ➤ Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana are launching a Statewide Townhall Tour with a stop in Grand Island on Friday, Feb. 13. NMM Executive Director Crista Eggers says the town halls will update residents on the state medical cannabis program and address new legislative questions (other stops include Scottsbluff, North Platte, Aurora and Lincoln). CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Denver Diocese named Rev. James Golka (a former Grand Island priest and current Bishop in Colorado Spring) as its next archbishop following Archbishop Samuel J. Aquila’s retirement. He will work with staff from both dioceses to plan his leadership transition. Nebraska TV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Grand Island Public Schools has named Selena Lukasiewicz as principal of Walnut Middle School and Kelli Wemhoff as principal of Starr Elementary School; both will assume their new roles this summer for the 2026-27 school year while the district also searches for an assistant principal at Dodge Elementary. Central Nebraska Today
- ➤ Senator Margo Juarez (bill proponent) has introduced a proposal to remove age restrictions for GED recipients, saying current rules do not work for everyone. The measure will be reviewed in Nebraska to expand access to education. KSNB
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Ice jams have caused a ditch to flood south of Grand Island today. Officials are monitoring the temporary flooding near the interstate to ensure public safety. KSNB
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ At the 12th NSAA State Dual Championships held Saturday, Feb. 7 at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds, Grand Island placed third in Class A. Other placements included Kearney second, York third, Central City second, Gibbon fifth, Burwell first, and Ravenna sixth. Central Nebraska Today
