  • Heartland United Way raised $10,500 to assist 14 local organizations during a recent government shutdown, with funds supporting food pantries, shelters and backpack programs across Hall, Hamilton, Howard and Merrick counties. It also matched donations up to $10,000 to boost local food supplies.  Nebraska TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Nebraska lawmakers are debating bills that include holding back struggling third graders and reinstating suspensions for kindergarten through second grade students. The Education Committee hearing is underway at the Capitol and supporters say the measures will provide extra time to learn, while critics warn of funding and fairness challenges.  KSNB
  • St. Agnes Catholic School marked its 70th anniversary during Catholic Schools Week by hosting its first-ever career fair where returned alumni inspired current students to explore career options.  The Grand Island Independent

  • The shorthanded Huskers lost to Michigan 75—72 Tuesday in Ann Arbor, snapping their 24-game win streak while key players sat out. Nebraska will face Illinois Sunday at Pinnacle Bank Arena.  Central Nebraska Today
  • The Big Ten announced Nebraska’s 2026 football schedule on Tuesday. The Cornhuskers will open conference play on Sept. 26 at Michigan State, play nonconference games at home on Sept. 5, 12 and 19, host key Big Ten matchups through Nov. 21, and close on Nov. 27 at Iowa.  Central Nebraska Today
