EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Grand Island Senior High honored 10 students with the Seal of Biliteracy. Elizabeth Gabriel Pintor, the first to earn the award, said it was the biggest highlight of her high school career. The Grand Island Independent
- ➤ Nominations are open for the 2026 D.J.'s Hero Awards Scholarships — named in memory of the late D.J. Sokol — that honor Nebraska high school seniors who have overcome adversity. A panel of civic leaders will choose at least 16 students to receive $12,000 at a luncheon in Omaha on April 28. Nebraska TV
- ➤ Twenty-four Nebraska high school seniors were awarded $1,000 Do The FAFSA Nebraska Scholarships by the EducationQuest Foundation for completing the FAFSA for college aid, and another drawing will award 36 more scholarships in April with a deadline on April 15 (students must plan to attend college full-time in Fall). - ➤ On Tuesday, the Grand Island City Council authorized Mayor Roger Steele to submit a state grant application to repair the Heartland Events Center ice rink chiller; if funded, the project will restore public skating and youth hockey programs. KSNB

- ➤ CHI Health St. Francis will close its skilled nursing facility at 2116 W. Faidley Ave. on March 10 — a move prompted by national shifts in care delivery. Staff, patients and families will receive support during the transition. Central Nebraska Today
