- ➤ Grand Island Area Habitat for Humanity is hosting free information sessions on Feb. 14 for future home buyers. The sessions (English at 10 a.m., Spanish at 11 a.m.) cover insurance, maintenance, lawn care and financial planning to help prepare for homeownership. KSNB

- ➤ Riverdale man Guy Johnson — keeping a century-old family tradition alive — teaches his grandson the art of wood carving using a lap leather that once belonged to his grandfather, a hobby that often skips a generation. KSNB
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Grand Island Public Schools recognized 10 students on Jan. 8 who earned the 2025 Nebraska Seal of Biliteracy – a program that awards Silver, Gold, or Platinum levels based on English and another language proficiency; the district highlighted the honor as a boost for college and career readiness. - ➤ The Grand Island Public Schools Board accepted Josh Sikes’ resignation on Jan. 8 and is seeking a volunteer to finish his Ward A term; residents must apply by 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9 with interviews on Feb. 12 and oath on March 12 (applications available on the website). Central Nebraska Today
- ➤ Grand Island Public Schools approved a nearly $2 million bid on Thursday night to upgrade wired networking in all school buildings and boost internet reliability for students & staff. The Grand Island Independent
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Grand Island experienced its warmest December on record with an average temperature of 35.6° reported by the National Weather Service — highs reached at least 50° on 16 days and peaked at 70° on Dec. 26. This record was 7.4° above normal compared to the previous record from 1991/92. Central Nebraska Today
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ JEO Consulting will present its flood reduction study for the Elm–Turkey Creek watershed to the Central Platte NRD Board on Thursday, Jan. 22 at 2 p.m. at 215 Kaufman Avenue in Grand Island—after which the board will consider seeking future funding for flood projects without committing to construction. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ CHI Health St. Francis and CHI Health Clinic, Nebraska Heart Institute will host a free community education session on health and wellness with licensed coach Anna Fruehling at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22 in Conference Room 2/3 at the hospital. Central Nebraska Today
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ The new indoor football team Nebraska Siege was announced in Grand Island at a press conference at the Crane Trust. Their first game is scheduled for Saturday, May 30 at 7pm against a Memphis team at the Heartland Events Center. KSNB
