ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A report from Luke Prokosch shows that temperatures (Dec. 4–Jan. 4) were the warmest ever, marking a warm close to 2025. The record-setting weather inspires local plans for outdoor weekend fun.  KSNB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local natural gas customers need to prepare for colder weather as the Nebraska Public Service Commission says the Cold Weather Rule is in effect until March to delay disconnections for late payments. Residents are advised to call their providers to set up payment plans and apply energy-saving measures—like lowering thermostats.  Nebraska TV
  • The Regents delayed a vote on an $800 million deal that would let the University buy Clarkson Regional Health’s share in Nebraska Medicine after senators urged review, rescheduling the vote for next Thursday; Nebraska Medicine warned the move could affect patient care and sought a seat at the table.  KSNB
  • The Nebraska Farm Bureau outlined its legislative priorities for 2026, urging lower property taxes and expanded agricultural opportunities in livestock and ethanol as it began the 109th Legislative Session. Farm Bureau President Mark McHargue encouraged residents to contact state senators to support these changes.  KSNB
  • 33 state senators signed a letter asking the Board of Regents to delay its vote on Nebraska Medicine's $800 million acquisition because the proposal lacks transparency for the public and Legislature; the Regents will meet on Thursday, Jan. 15 at 9 a.m. to discuss the issue.  KSNB

  • CHI Health Advanced Wound Care (St. Francis) announced the addition of Megan Scheer, APRN, to help treat complex wounds with personalized care. The practice at 2620 W. Faidley Ave is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Central Nebraska Today
  • CHI Health reports that Influenza A is spreading quickly in our area with nearly one in four flu tests coming back positive, and health officials urge residents to get a flu shot and seek treatment early as cases are expected to rise after the holidays.  Nebraska TV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Grand Island's arena football team unveiled its new name, the Nebraska Siege, honoring local military and the Sandhill Cranes. Community member Gabe Perez, whose suggestion topped 800 entries, announced that its season opener versus Memphis will be on May 30 with Matthew Caward as general manager.  Nebraska TV
  • Grand Island’s new Diamond League baseball team announced its name, Fightin’ Cranes, Thursday morning via email to honor local sandhill cranes and regional wildlife. The team, chosen from more than 50 community entries, will take the field at Ryder Park in 2026.  KSNB
