CULTURE NEWS

  • The Grand Island Public Library will open the Sheldon Statewide exhibition “Nebraska’s Legacy” tomorrow, Jan. 7, and it will display paintings, sculptures and photographs capturing over 100 years of University art until Feb. 4 (featuring works by former and current faculty).  Central Nebraska Today

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Registration opens today for the 41st Nebraska Women in Agriculture Conference, set for Feb. 25–27 at Younes Conference Center South in Kearney. Two–day passes cost $150 if registered by Feb. 15 and $175 later, while one–day passes are available for $90 with an extra $25 fee for the preconference workshop.  Nebraska TV
  • Josh Sikes will resign from the Grand Island Public Schools board after nearly three years of service.  The Grand Island Independent
  • Grand Island school board member Josh Sikes will resign at the Jan. 8 meeting after accepting a new job and moving his family out of the district; the board will post applications online to fill his Ward A seat with the new appointee taking the oath on March 16.  KSNB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Josh Sikes will resign from the Grand Island Public Schools Board effective Jan. 8 as he and his family move for a new job; the board will post the vacancy online and begin interviews on Feb. 12 to fill his Ward A seat (serving until December).  Central Nebraska Today
  • Twelve recruits began six months of intensive training at the Nebraska State Patrol Academy in Grand Island on Monday as part of Camp 73, with graduation scheduled for June 18 and applications for Camp 74 opening on March 2.  KSNB
  • First St. W in Grand Island will be closed from Wheeler Ave. S to Locust St. S today for concrete work (Galvan Construction is the contractor) and will reopen later today.  Nebraska TV
  • Twelve recruits began training yesterday at Nebraska State Patrol Camp 73 in Grand Island as they take their first step toward becoming state troopers.  KSNB

HEALTH NEWS

  • CHI Health St. Francis in Grand Island welcomed the first baby of 2026 on Monday morning at 8:47 a.m.; the infant, weighing 7 pounds and 2.9 ounces, was born to residents Jesse and Amy Cross and joins her older siblings Adelaide, Savannah, and Aria.  KSNB
  • CHI Health Good Samaritan welcomed its first baby of 2026 on Jan. 1 at 10:31 p.m. - baby Harlow Maxine Briggs weighed 8 pounds and measured 20½ inches, with parents Zach and Kelsie Briggs from Broken Bow and a four-year-old sister celebrating her arrival.  Central Nebraska Today

SPORTS NEWS

  • Braden Frager scored 15 points including a clutch late field goal to lead Nebraska to a 72-69 win over Ohio State on Tuesday, Jan. 6. The Huskers remain undefeated at 15-0 + moved to ranked 10 in the AP Top 25, energizing local sports fans.  KSNB
  • Brendan Black, a three-year starting offensive lineman for Iowa State, has committed to transfer to Nebraska + he joins Kenny Minchey as one of the first students from the football portal, which closes on Jan. 17.  Central Nebraska Today
  • Nebraska men’s basketball broke into the top 10 for the first time since 1966 with a win over Michigan State Friday. The 14-0 Cornhuskers will face Ohio State Monday at 5:30 p.m. with pregame coverage at 4:30 p.m. on KLIN.  Central Nebraska Today
